SubTerra LLC is a plant-based pharmaceutical manufacturer located in White Pine, Michigan, committed to the production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) such as high value proteins and phytochemicals.
While traditional growing methods, including greenhouses, are limited by soil conditions and climate, SubTerra is unique in that all crops are grown in a biosecure underground environment, resulting in several key benefits:
Controlled Environment - Year-Round Growth
Conditions within the growth chambers are completely controlled through automation of lights, heat and water. With no drought, floods, wind, insects or harsh natural elements, SubTerra crops are afforded uninterrupted growing cycles, resulting in maximal product yields on a continuous basis.
Rapid Growth Potential
Potentially as a result of slightly higher carbon dioxide levels, plants grow better in biosecure underground facilities than in fields or greenhouses.
SubTerra is committed to quality assurance and is compliant with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
Pesticide and Herbicide Free Accelerated Growth
With no threat of insect, pests, or the plant diseases they can carry, there is no need for pesticides or herbicides and no residues on unpurified bulk material from SubTerra plants. This practice streamlines regulatory compliance requirements by eliminating the need to quantify unwanted material residue throughout the production process.
High Containment Facility
As a result of the production site being far removed from any surface agricultural activity, SubTerra meets the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations, ensuring no risk of unintended genetic release. The facility has been issued a level 2 containment rating.
Bio Security Below Ground
SubTerra biosecure growth chambers not only keep the plants safe from external threats, the facility also protects the intellectual property of the high value crops. High-tech intrusion alarm further ensures crop safety.
